Commission for Compact outlines its priorities 11/04/07

Compact Commissioner John Stoker has warned there is much to be done to boost commitment to the agreement, as the newly-launched Commission for the Compact outlined its first work.

“There is still a gap between commitment to Compact principles of good partnership and their full delivery,” Stoker said. “I welcome the willingness leaders in central and local government, and the community and voluntary sector, have shown to acknowledge this gap, and the commitment they have expressed to work to close it and to promote best practice in partnership.”

Stoker said the first programmes of work centred around four key areas; performance, policy development, learning and promotion. The Commission will now:

  • develop an evidence base on the Compact’s progress
  • develop tools to assess organisations’ performance in meeting the Compact
  • review and consult on the Compact and its codes of practice
  • follow key areas of government work to ensure that national, regional and local frameworks follow Compact principles

The Commission will consult its stakeholders on these priorities. It would also keep a close eye on change in the sector, Stoker said. “Both government and the Commission need to pay close attention to partnership in areas such as local government and health; where large scale change is underway that has a close bearing on Compact principles.”
