Finance Director of the Year

Sponsored by

Winner Gary Page, finance director at FSNBF with Nick Morgan, head of the charites group at Chantrey Vellacott DFK and the awards' host Dominic Holland

WINNER: Fire Services National Benevolent Fund - Gary Page
Gary is described as a 'down to earth accountant', yet as the first finance director of the FSNBF he transformed the role of the finance department from one of historical reporting to a forward looking unit that supports the management of the organisation, vital to its strategic planning. In order to do this he has had to manage change within the organisation, and create a set of key performance indicators that could easily communicate the financial information that he processed. Gary attempts to create best practice in all the financial functions, and has already adopted SORP 2005.

SHORTLIST: St John Ambulance - Vanessa Pritchard
Vanessa's work and dedication to clear reporting resulted in St John Ambulance being the first charity to produce its accounts under SORP 2005. Joining the organisation in 2004 from WWF, Vanessa quickly decided to adopt SORP as part of her drive to make the organisation's finances as clear as possible, seeing this as a way to benefit the organisation rather than as a hurdle. All of the organisation's financial policies are spelt out in its annual report, and the forward budgeting has been revolutionised to ensure that projects with long lifespans do not face having to re-apply for funds each year. Vanessa has also provided financial training throughout the organisation as well as organising seminars. In all, transparency and best practice have helped put St John Ambulance at the forefront of financial reporting.
