Shami is a tireless campaigner on issues ranging from freedom of expression to the right to privacy, equality of the young to threats to our civil liberties in the face of terrorism and, at the core, the basic human rights we should all be able to take for granted. She was chosen for the Outstanding Individual Achievement award as she epitomises what an effective campaigner should be: relentless, always at the forefront of debate and, in the case of Liberty’s mission, never afraid to put forth the challenge when the rights of humanity are in danger of being compromised.
