#GivingTuesday ‘biggest ever day of grassroots giving’ - CAF

Interim figures suggest online giving has spiked today as the UK’s second annual #GivingTuesday attracted support from individuals, businesses, politicians, and celebrities.

Charities Aid Foundation leads the day, and announced more than 1,400 UK charities and businesses are partners of #GivingTuesday this year.

#GivingTuesday launched in the UK last year after being first celebrated in the US in 2012. #GivingTuesday asks people to mark the day by doing one thing for a good cause after the shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Contributions can range from volunteering, giving money or publicising and talking about support for a cause on social media.

This year PayPal is attempting to set a new Guinness World Record for the most money donated online for charity in 24-Hours with a global 1 per cent match on all donations.

By lunchtime today the hashtag #GivingTuesday had been used 115,000 times globally, and 24,000 times in the UK since noon Monday. The hashtag began trending in the UK on Monday night as hundreds of organisations shared their plans for the day.

Celebrities, politicians, and athletes to lend their support this year include Boris Johnson, Stephen Fry, JK Rowling, Emma Watson, Miranda Hart, Tom Daley, Jeremy Corbyn, Gary Lineker, Lily Allen, David Baddiel, Rob Wilson, Peter Andre, Alistair Campbell, Joanna Froggatt, and David Tennant.

CAF head of policy and campaigns Hannah Terrey said the day has shown there is an appetite to give to good causes and talk about generosity.

“It is fantastic to see so many people join together to give something back for what has become the UK’s biggest day of grassroots giving,” Terrey said. “We have great tradition of being one of the world’s most generous countries. The huge response to #GivingTuesday today from people of all walks of life has really demonstrated that we are a country which loves to get behind a good cause.”
