To coincide with the one-year anniversary of last summer's riots, ResPublica and NCVYS are launching today a call for submissions of evidence, data, case studies, written articles and commentary which will feed into forthcoming activity from its Commission on Youth.

Various analyses of last summer's riots have attempted to analyse the motivations of the rioters and the causes of the riots, but have produced a number of fragmented accounts emphasising isolated issues of welfare dependency or distrust of the police.

As part of a 12-month Commission on Youth, ResPublica and NCVYS are seeking to identify gaps in public understanding and offer innovative angles to these by investigating the correlation between institutional ‘anomie’ and civil unrest.

Submissions should take the form of data, case studies, written articles and short videos relating to the following key themes of the Commission:

a) Young people’s relationships with authorities

b) Family structures and community support

c) Young people’s engagement and participation in civic society and democratic outlets.

Evidence under each theme will be taken into consideration by a working group comprised of civil society leaders and tasked with planning future Commission activity and next steps.

The closing date for submissions is Friday 12th October 2012.
