The Disasters Emergency Committee has appointed Karen Brown as the next chair of its board of trustees.

She will succeed Clive Jones CBE when he completes his term as chair in March 2018.

Brown joins the board with experiences from the media, commercial and voluntary sectors, including 14 years’ experience in international development governance. She previously served in leadership roles at two DEC member charities: as chair of Oxfam GB from 2011-2017 and prior to that as chair of ActionAid UK (2003-2009) and vice chair of ActionAid International (2008-2010).

Responding to the announcement, Brown said: “People in Britain have shown time and again that they want to reach out and support others around the world when their communities are devastated by disaster.

“They trust the DEC and its member charities to respond in the best possible way on their behalf. It will be a very great privilege to support the DEC in fulfilling its compact with the British public.”

DEC chief executive Saleh Saeed added: “We are delighted to welcome Karen as our new chair elect. With her impressive track record of experience in both the media and international development sectors, we are certain that Karen will make a significant contribution to our work.”
